Trying to figure out which hay will work best for your little guy or gal? 2nd cutting Timothy Hay is considered the “gold standard” for healthy adult small animals, with the perfect ratio of nutrients for health maintenance.

Our 2nd cutting Timothy hay is leafy with a soft stem and a medium amount of flowery heads. (Small animals love the flowery heads… yum!) The texture and fiber amount are in between 1st and 3rd cutting, and many pet parents consider 2nd cutting to be the best of both worlds. (It’s the most popular hay we sell.)

2nd cut Timothy Hay is green in color but may be mixed with yellow/brown depending on weather and growing conditions. This is totally normal and not harmful to your animal. Hay is a natural product.

If you’d like more details on how 2nd cutting Timothy hay compares to other types of hay, we’re here to help. We explain many of the different types of hay here, but to summarize, the most common types are Timothy hay (1st, 2nd, and 3rd cutting), alfalfa hay, orchard hay, and oat hay. Different types of hay have different characteristics, so it’s important to understand the profiles of each to meet your pet’s needs.

Small Pet Select knows hay. Inside and out. We have close relationships with many hay farmers in Washington State, and with more than 30 years of connections, you’re getting the best of the best. We personally choose the hay we like. We go to the fields, see the hay and smell the fresh crop. We hand pack each and every box that’s shipped to our customers. Our eyes are on everything… from the field to your door. We work hard to keep you as happy with us as your animal is with our products. Happy animals = happy parents. And we love that.

My bunny is a picky eater and usually leaves half the hay untouched, but she's been cleaning up every strand of this 2nd cutting. The nutrient ratio is spot on for her adult needs and I've noticed her digestion is much more regular since switching. Only downside is I go through a bag faster than I e

The bales are consistently green and soft, no dusty stems my guinea pig has to push aside. She actually finishes her bowl now, and the nutrient balance gives me peace of mind for her adult diet.

Christopher L. ★★★★★

My bunnies have always been picky, but this 2nd cutting Timothy Hay is the first one they'll actually finish before asking for more. The stems and leaves are soft without being dusty, and the nutrient balance is exactly what my adult guys need to stay healthy.
